Fight Scene Update

In the post, "Another Overhand Right Video", I linked to a fight scene & mentioned "If you're dancing, dance. If you're fighting, fight. Don't confuse the two."

I have since discovered the scene actually came from a Hollywood movie called "Never Back Down". I also have obtained a better image of the scene:

I understand completely where you are coming from in this post. Boy, he really "waxed that dude"!
Although dancing and fighting shouldn't mix, here is a similarity I noticed.

Rhythm: A dancer gets into a rhythm of movement (forward, back, etc.) A good dancer establishes a good, strict rhythm and succeeds in staying in time with the music.
How that translates into fighting: When you are attacked, your opponent has just established a rhythm of punches, kicks, etc. You successfully defend yourself when you break his rhythm, by blocking his blows, and establishing your own rhythm, by successfully counter-attacking.

And as a side note, dancing is an excellent exercise in staying on the balls of your feet, which I believe is taught by all MA systems.

Maybe I'm way out in the trees on this one, just some thoughts I had.

You make some good points, Stephen. The only thing I would add is that you must break your own rhythm as well as your opponent's. That way, you you become less predictable.

Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art, teaches its movements through dance. It is the art depicted in the video, although let me hasten to say that I'm sure not all practitioners of the art do the showboating you see in that scene.

The Kata of Karate has also been described as dancelike.

Nevertheless, as you observed, "fighting and dancing shouldn't mix . . . ."

Point conceded, my friend. I had been wondering how my analogy would work due to the fact that fighting should not be choreographed.

*angry with youtube intolerant dial-up*

I heard about this movie, but passed on it (heard it had a lesbian kiss in it). Gina Carano was in it though, I think (she's a famous MMA fighter).

Wish I had something worth while to contribute to the already stimulating conversation, though. :-(
