Improvised Weapons by Kelly McCann

Kelly McCann (aka Jim Grover) has a Paladin Press video on the topic of improvised weapons for self defense. I think the excerpt below is worth looking at.

I particularly like what he says about using spray lubricant, mainly because you can get it in smaller, more easily carried cans than wasp spray.

David, you are new to this blog, so a few words are in order.

First, your opinions are valued here, even when they are contrary to mine. We've had some rather sharp disagreements here and remained friends.

Second -- and very important -- is the matter of courtesy. Epithets such as "McGrubber" and "Stupidity" are not only unacceptable, but they hurt rather than help your case.

Furthermore, an abusive comment from someone who profits from the sale of pepper spray is probably not going to incline an intelligent reader to buy your product.

Therefore, I am going to do you a favor and delete your comment. If you would like to replace it with one that shows respect toward those with whom you disagree, I will let it stand and delete this comment as well.

I appreciate that web-sites like this one are sharing proactive safety ideas. That’s a good thing. However, there is an issue with WASP spray. WASP sprays’ labels state, "It’s a violation of federal law to use in any manner inconsistent with this label. Never Use Indoors!” Police departments worldwide use pepper spray because the inflammatory effects of this agent work on those which cannot feel pain (very important). The inflammatory effects of pepper spray cause eyes to close involuntarily and produce a loss of breath sensation. Pepper spray has been proven effective on deterring and incapacitating aggressive, combative, intoxicated and drug induced individuals for over 20 years.
To date, no human testing has been conducted on WASP spray and it’s a violation of federal law to use in self defense. There are many home defense pepper spray options which will deploy up to 25 feet and unlike WASP sprays, these pepper sprays do not require the user to be as accurate because their spray pattern will cover an entire doorway. Also, there are plenty of personal sized pepper sprays that you can carry on your key chain. It's not a good idea to use WASP spray for home protection since it is against the law and WASP spray labels themselves state "NEVER USE INDOORS". Pepper spray is a safe, proven option which is trusted and relied upon by police officers worldwide.

Thanks, Michael. You bring up some valid points. I am all for Pepper Spray as an adjunct to one's self defense preparations.

Certainly, I would never advocate wasp spray as one's first line of home defense.

Nevertheless, there will be some places where you will not be allowed to take pepper spray. For those venues, I think it may be wise to investigate improvised alternatives. That's what this video was intended to do.
