Mindset: Aggressiveness

When I read Anthony Herbert's Soldier, I remember a statement that stuck with me. He said that anyone could learn the skills of close quarters combat -- they are not complex.

Then he went on to say that the deciding factor in an encounter did not depend on skill so much as aggressiveness. The combatant who seized the initiative and pressed that advantage invariably survived.

The following video illustrates the quality of aggressiveness in a self defense situation. Thanks to JWC for sending me the link to this video.

Don and I just watched a news-program tonight on a couple who were kidnapped, abused, shot, and rolled in a river to drown (these two improbably survived).

Of course, I couldn't help but think of your blog and its counsel; and how their meekly submitting in the first place (even with the assailant wielding a gun) led to what really would have been death anyway, but for a series of providential and ordinarily improbable results.

To their credit, it was their belated aggression, refusing to succumb meekly to the water, the loss of blood, to their terrible injuries, that helped them make it.

I hope we are all aggressive in the right way, at the right time. It is also possible to die an aggressive victor within, though the body perish.

I'm reminded of a petite young woman who was forced back into her car's back-seat by a thug twice her size. He thought he had her restrained, but as he fumbled with his pants and tore at her clothes, she got one hand free, jabbed a finger in his eye, and flipped that punctured eye-ball out on to his cheek. Needless to say, the would-be rapist ran screaming from the scene and was later arrested in the E.R.

The young lady is the stout-hearted daughter of a retired marine gunnery sergeant. Semper Fi, baby.

Just as a follow-up note on the subject of aggressiveness. My kid brother is a street cop in a city of 50,000. He is 5'6", 185 lbs., phenomenal shape for a guy pushing 40. His favorite saying? 'It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.' Refuse to lose, people.
