Armed Volunteers Provide Church Security

"There's no scripture that shows me that we need to keep weapons out of the church. There is scripture that says we are supposed to protect the flock.” (Pastor Frank Pomeroy, quoted in article linked below)

Bless those who shoulder the responsibility.

Guns and God: Growing number of churches want armed security

We have a very small congregation in a small country church so old there is no running water. I have been asked to be our sheepdog and I take it seriously. There is no doubt churches are a major soft target now and the more sacred something used to be the quicker it will be a target these days. It has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment or gun rights- I think like our Founding Fathers did on that score.

I also think too many people treat a firearm like a woobie- just having it makes them feel safe and they have no plan nor do they practice to ensure there will be no negligent discharges or collateral damage if it becomes necessary to use it.

You should be the first one to welcome newcomers, perhaps turning away a flock of wrath! It also gives an opportunity to look for any sort of behavioral tells. Having worked overnights at a convenience store, you can believe those intent on any crime behaves differently! Usually they are trying to work up the nerve to act. Perhaps you can detect this and position yourself discretely. I always remind myself that people in need belong in church and not to run them off by being too obvious. There is so much involved here!

And how to behave around those members that do not feel comfortable with firearms in the House Of God? Do I point out to them that the sword of Goliath was kept in a temple when David went to get it from Ahimelek, or that Nehemiah had groups armed while others repaired the walls- or quote Luke 22. I don't know, I just know I couldn't live with myself if I did nothing to stop evil being done to innocents.

Again, I am happy there are folks like you that help me address my troubled soul on the matter. It is something that I often wonder is proper and right- but when I hear of others committing violence on any unarmed and undeserving person I experience righteous anger. Ipray often that it is the right decision, and I always come back to it.
