I had not heard this good old gospel tune until my wife sent me the
link. The words to "The Fight is On" ring with victory, and the melody
is catchy and singable.
Leila N. Morris wrote both words and melody in 1905. Click here to hear the music.
The fight is on, the trumpet sound is ringing out,
The cry “To arms!” is heard afar and near;
The Lord of hosts is marching on to victory,
The triumph of the Christ will soon appear.
Refrain
The fight is on, O Christian soldier,
And face to face in stern array,
With armor gleaming, and colors streaming,
The right and wrong engage today!
The fight is on, but be not weary;
Be strong, and in His might hold fast;
If God be for us, His banner o’er us,
We’ll sing the victor’s song at last!
The fight is on, arouse, ye soldiers brave and true!
Jehovah leads, and victory will assure;
Go buckle on the armor God has given you,
And in His strength unto the end endure.
Refrain
The Lord is leading on to certain victory;
The bow of promise spans the eastern sky;
His glorious Name in every land shall honored be;
The morn will break, the dawn of peace is nigh.

I like this hymn! One thing quite different about my approach to the Gospel is my attraction for self-defense and the management of aggression. I was raised in a rowdy Pentecostal church and strayed for most of my life. When I came home I wondered if my interests, that included not only empty hand, knife, stick and blade practice- as well as swords and less applicable things- as well as firearms and light prepping( I don't believe in a zombie anything or even really the whole survivalist thing- I do believe in always being prepared to help others in need, be it an aspirin or a flat tire)- was counter to the teachings of Christ. But I couldn't help being drawn to the Old Testament warriors such as David, and Paul repeatedly exhorted others to behave as a Soldier of Christ. So hymns with that message, such as Onward Christian Soldiers, always inspired me. I guess I see myself as a Christian Warrior, with or without the interests. I don't have the gifts to be a shepherd. Settle for being a sheepdog.
Thank you, Monkey At A Typewriter for sharing your background. My apologies for not answering you sooner. For some reason I have not been receiving notifications when someone comments here on WARSKYL.
I hope you have seen my recent posts reviewing Jeff Cooper's "Principles of Personal Defense." I think you may find them helpful as you continue to fight the good fight.
